Club members who were unsuccessful in the main public ballot may enter the club ballot (subject to requirements) for a second chance to gain a place. The ballot is now open, and will remain open until midnight on Wednesday 13th April. The draw will take place at the start of Senior Endurance training on Tuesday 19th April.

Senior Endurance 3000m Track Championship 2021

Saturday 18th September 2021

OVERVIEW:

The 3000m Track Championship is an annual race for Senior Endurance, held during the club’s Track & Field Championships. After a year’s absence, the race returns for 2021. It is the culmination of the summer track training block, and gives members one last chance to push themselves around the track. Prior attendance at track training is not required, however, and ALL members are invited and encouraged to participate in this traditionally competitive race. A large attendance would be great to see.

This will be a scratch race, but finishing times will also be age-adjusted afterwards. In that way, prizes can be awarded to the male and female race winners, as well as to those who score most highly for their age. The track championship trophies will be awarded to the scratch race winners. Medals will be awarded to the top three male and female runners in the age-graded results.

Please make every effort to attend this event and support your club.

ELIGIBILITY:

Only current members of Motherwell AC [on LoveAdmin] and approved ‘trialists’ can participate. Only current members of Motherwell AC can be awarded prizes.

ON THE DAY:

This event will be the club training session for Saturday 18th September. Please meet at the track at Wishaw Sports Centre (Alexander Street, ML2 0HQ). Registration for the race will be from 9.30am, with the race starting at 10.00am prompt.

Please wear your MAC vest. If you do not have one, please make this known in advance so something can be sorted out.

Drinks and snacks will be provided after the conclusion of the race, so no need to rush off.

Mental Health Awareness Week

Dear Member,

This week is Mental Health Awareness Week, so we thought this would be an opportune time to reach out and remind you of the support MAC can offer around mental health.

As the club’s Welfare Officers, it is our role to look out for the welfare of our athletes, and mental health is a huge part of that. It is the responsibility of everyone at the club to look out for each other, to be able to spot the signs and symptoms of mental health issues, and to know where to go for support.

Section 3.5 in our Welfare & Childcare Policy: (https://motherwellac.com/wp-content/uploads/Motherwell-AC-Welfare-Childcare-Policy-2020-1.pdf ) has some helpful links on services you can contact for support, training and tools. We would like to encourage everyone to give this a read if you can ,and if you or someone you know at the club is struggling, please reach out.

If you have any concerns or questions at all, we are always only a phone call or email away.

Thanks,

Ross Thomson

World Restart a Heart Day

Restart a Heart is a day of action with the aim to teach vital life-saving CPR skills to as many people as possible.

On 12th October, NHS Lanarkshire will be aiming to teach over 200,000 in vital life saving Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR).

This will take place

  • At main entrances of Monklands, Hairmyres and Wishaw General Hospitals (between 9am-5pm)
  • Wishaw Sports Centre (5pm-9pm)

See Save a Life Scotland for more detail and other events to mark Restart a Heart day.

Registration Helper required for Wednesdays

Please see the letter below from our Club Chair, Tracey Lamont about an opportunity to aid the safe registration of young athletes on a Wednesday evening.  It was given to parents on 5th September.

NOTE: the club is looking for volunteers for other positions too and is grateful for any and all help given.

Dear Parent / Guardian

I would like to ask you to please consider helping to support and ensure the safe running of Motherwell Athletics Club training for your child and the others who also attend on a Wednesday evening.

Motherwell Athletics Club relies on volunteers to enable the safe, quality coaching and positive learning experiences all athletes have when they come to training and are involved in other internal and external opportunities offered throughout the club.

On a Wednesday night at Wishaw Sports Centre we need people to undertake the registration and help keep the records up to date from 5.35pm to 6.15pm . This is a simple but essential role. At present Pauline Russell (Welfare Officer) has been helping out with this role on a short term basis. We need a couple of parents/guardians to now take this role on to continue enabling the coaches to concentrate on the coaching. This is particularly important for the continued coaching for children under the age of 16.

Anyone who is able to help with this please let any of the coaches know as soon as possible. Someone in the club will help support you in this role until you are confident to do it yourself.
Anyone who takes on this role would need to undertake a PVG disclosure which the club will arrange at no expense to the volunteers.

Yours sincerely

Tracey Lamont

However the club is seeking a Communications Manager to

  • Be a first point of contact for enquiries from prospective athletes (both junior and senior)
  • Respond to requests to post information on the website/social media in a timely manner

  • Would like to represent the club as a first point of contact
  • Would like to pursue a career in Publishing, Digital Media, Social Media or Marketing (or just take on aspects of those)

Any technical training required shall be provided, though note the barrier of entry in terms of technology (Facebook pages, WordPress sites, Google Drive/Docs) is low.

The club requests that ALL members please send the following information to Barbara Hogg (babs@motherwellac.com), Club Secretary.

  • Phone Numbers for yourself

Details will be stored in compliance with data protection regulations.

Ravenscraig Regional Sports Facility Athletics Provision Consultation

All members and parents are invited and will be very welcome.  It is important that we have as many members and parents in attendance as possible to hear what the club has been doing over the course of the year and to show support for the development of the club.  We would especially encourage more members and parents from the Track and Field section to attend the meeting which usually lasts no more than an hour.  Members aged 15 and over are eligible to vote.

Specifically, the roles of Chair and Secretary require to be filled at this meeting as both positions become vacant.

In addition, a change to the Club Constitution is proposed by the Chair.  The proposal is to amend the word “Chairman” to “Chair” to recognise equality guidelines.  It is hoped that a separate meeting is not required to make this change however if required, this will be held immediately after the Annual General Meeting.  Any objections to this proposal may be submitted at any time up until or during the meeting.

In the meantime, this announcement is to provide notice of the AGM and to invite any motions for discussion or decision.  Motions to be discussed must be submitted in writing to the Chair no later than Thursday 19th October 2017.

LAAA T&F Championships, 2 September 2017

A huge well done to the 26 athletes who made the short journey to East Kilbride on Saturday, 2 September to take part in what was the last competitive athletic event of the summer season before our Club Champs. There were many truly impressive performances across the whole club with lots of new PBs and plenty of medals, however, we feel that Stephen Ross, one of our senior athletes, who won gold medals in both the 100m and 200m races, deserves a special mention.

Stephen not only PB’d and won the gold medal in the 200m but was also awarded the Churchill Trophy for being the first athlete over the line in his 100m race. This trophy is solid silver (named in honour of Churchill’s leadership during the war), was first presented in 1945 to the winner of senior men’s 100 yard dash (now 100m) and has inscribed on it the name of an Olympian who was part of the GB squad in the 1948 Olympics! Incredibly, this is the second time Stephen has won this award. Congratulations Stephen!!

Many thanks also to coaches and parent volunteers (David Gilchrist and Joe Lenzi) for helping out again, and to all parents for supporting this event. We hope you enjoyed the day.

Chair Vacancy – We want to hear from you!

Ahead of the Club Annual General Meeting which will be held on Thursday 26 October at Ravenscraig, the club committee are seeking interest from people interested in taking on the role of the Club Chair.

Our current Chair – Ewen Cameron – is standing down after four years in post and a successor is now being sought.  The new Chair will require to be approved by the club membership at the AGM.

This volunteer role is crucial in terms of leading the Club Committee throughout the year.  The role involves chairing meetings, representing the club at local and national meetings, creating and developing partnerships and co-ordinating and managing the development of the club.

The post holder should be able to commit around 8-10 hours per month to manage meetings, communications and club actions.  There is support from the committee members and the offer of help from the outgoing Chair remains available.

Effective communication skills, ability to manage meetings, a flexible approach to dealing with partners and a ‘can do’ attitude are the key requirements for the role so if you are interested, we want to hear from you!

Motherwell AC is growing and this an exciting time to get involved in leading the club going forward.  If you are interested and would like to discuss the opportunity in more detail, please contact Ewen via ewen.cameron@motherwellac.com or on 07979 149782

Rothesay Bus Pick-Up Times

If anything happens and you have to call off, please let Elaine Jamieson know by phoning or texting 07951 960469.

Sandy Robertson

The sudden death of Sandy Robertson came as a great shock to those of us who knew
him.

Recently at the Scottish Master’s Championships he was chatting with great enthusiasm
about his role in the up and coming Celtic Games.

His love and involvement in Athletics, which integrated well with his 30-year career as a
P.E. Teacher, spanned several decades. As an Athlete, he was Scottish 400m Hurdles
Champion in 1972. As a Master Coach, his influence ranged from Motherwell A.C. to
Malawi. In September of 1972 he became National Athletics and Football Coach in Malawi
culminating in his squad setting 26 national records at the 1974 Commonwealth Games.

From a Scottish perspective, he coached the Athletics teams for the Commonwealth
Games in 1970, 82, 86 and also had a leading role in the Scottish Schools teams for the
International Schools Games and Indoor Pentathlon.

His technical knowledge and enthusiasm were second to none but he kept an open mind
when new training methods, backed by Scientific research, became a topic for discussion. He has been responsible for the development of many of our young Athletes, Coaches (old
and young) and School Teachers.

He is a great loss to his wife Evelyn, family and friends to whom we send our thoughts and
prayers.

The Athletics community has lost a great Coach, Mentor and friend.

Aberdeen AAC Open Graded Meet: 23 July 2017

A huge well done to Alan Robertson who competed in the Aberdeen AAC OGM, as part of his preparations for the  upcoming European Masters Athletics Championships in Aarhus, Denmark. Unconfirmed results indicate that Alan clocked 11.44 in the 100m and 23.16 in the 200m, both times a fraction off of his current PBs, which is very encouraging indeed. His daughter Lucy, one of our U13 athletes, who is also competing in the javelin event at the YDL final in Grangemouth on Saturday, ran a PB 100m time of 16.13. Well done Lucy!

MAC Race Night

The club will be holding a Race Night in St Brides Hall, Motherwell at 7.30 pm on Saturday 28th October.

Ticket prices and further information will be provided nearer the time but this is the first fund raising event the club has had in a number of years, so we are hoping you will all make a special effort to come along and support your club.

It is open to all members – Road Runners and Track and Field, friends and family, so please put the date in your diary and come along and enjoy a great evening.

We will be asking for raffle prizes and volunteers to help out on the night, but in the meantime, if you have any ideas for other fund raising games that we can do on the night, please speak to Elaine or Tracey.

Leading Athletics – Intro to Coaching

Are you interested in coaching in athletics?

If so Scottish Athletics have created a new certified workshop to introduce participants to coaching.

No prior knowledge is required and it will be delivered in a single 3 hour workshop (date and time TBA).

The club would be happy to cover the cost of any participants who are prepared to attend and subsequently help out the club.

Please see Scottish Athletics for further information on the course.

Message Board Closing Down

With greater use of social networks, including Facebook and Twitter, for communication between the club and it’s members (and between club members), it was decided at the recent committee meeting to close the rarely used MAC message board.

Motherwell AC will continue to offer a number of more popular ways to communicate with it including

as well as news updates on the website, Facebook and Twitter.

As a result, the Message Board shall be

  • Locked down with immediate effect (no more posts allowed / no more accounts created)
  • Removed on 19th May 2017.

If you have any questions, please feel free to ask John McParland (webmaster@motherwellac.com).

Foodbank Collection – Tu 4th April – Change of Time

David Shaw will be down before the start of the TT rather than at the end.

Anyone who is donating, please bring your donations into the Boathouse with you at 6.30 pm.  He doesn’t have a lot of time to spare, so if you could be at the Boathouse for as close to 6.30 as possible, this will help get the donations in, and the TT kicked off at the usual time.

Any non-perishable foods and toiletries are welcome, but here is a reminder of the foods that are in high demand:

Tinned meat, small jars of coffee, tinned fruit, savoury rice, super noodles and UHT Long Life milk (whole and semi skimmed).

YDL Trials and Inter Club Championship 2017: Grangemouth 2 April 2017

Very well done to all our T&F athletes who competed at Grangemouth yesterday. What a fantastic effort from you all! Lots of medals and some exceptional performances. We are all very proud of your hard work and commitment.

Official confirmed results will be on the Po10 soon. Thanks to coaches and parents for their help and support.

Coaches will advise about Team NL qualification for the first Match at Ayr on 23 April as soon as possible.

Some photos from the day are attached – apologies if we’ve missed anyone. What a great day!

Food Bank Collection Jan 2017

The Committee have recently agreed to a proposal to support the Basic Food Bank, which is local to us, having bases in Motherwell, Wishaw, Airdrie and Bellshill.

We will be encouraging runners at the monthly Time Trials to bring along items of non-perishable foods, toiletries, nappies, etc. You can bring as many, or as little items as you choose, and Elaine will make sure these are collected on the night and dropped off at the local base in Motherwell.

We will put reminders out on Facebook and the website on the lead up to the Time Trial, but it is hoped that you will all support this venture, and help those less fortunate than ourselves, much of the time through no fault of their own.

This is also an excellent way to get rid of all those unwanted boxes of chocolates, biscuits and selection boxes that you’re never going to eat anyway because you’re a fine tuned athlete…simply put them away, and bring them down to January’s Time Trial on 10 January.

T&F Holiday Period Training Arrangements

The last full T&F club training session will take place on Wednesday 21st December 2016 at Wishaw Sports Centre.  All groups return to usual training on Monday, 9 January 2017 at Ravenscraig RSF and Hamilton Palace Grounds and on Wednesday, 11 January 2017 at Wishaw Sports Centre.

Coaches for each group will be in touch directly with details of training arrangements over the holiday period, especially for those athletes competing in the first Indoor League Meet at the Emirates on 8 January 2017.  Please contact your/your child’s coach for further details, if required.

Thank you for your continued support and commitment during 2016. Wishing you all a happy and peaceful time over the festive season.

AGM Announcement 2016

In accordance with the constitution of Motherwell Athletics Club, the Annual General Meeting of the club will be held on Thursday 27th October at 8.15pm, in the College Lecture Room at Ravenscraig Regional Sports Facility.

RR Championship Race Change of Venue (3rd Sept – Linwood Parkrun)

Due to the Inter Region Triathlon Championships being held at Strathclyde Park on 3 & 4 September the Parkrun has been cancelled that weekend.

The RRs Sub-Committee considered changing the date of our race, but voted narrowly in favour of a change of venue. We considered Livingston, Linwood, Pollock and Silverknowes.

Again by a slim majority, Linwood was the new venue approved by the sub-committee. Linwood is apparently a flat fast two lap course and the event takes place at ON-X Linwood, Brediland Road, Linwood, PA3 3RA at the usual time of 9.30 AM.Sorry if this causes you any inconvenience.

Joe Hoolaghan, on behalf of the RRs Sub-Committee.

Starters Needed for Scottish Athletics

Scottish Athletics are running short of Officials to cover all the events that go on in Scotland.  One of the lowest groups is the Starter/ Starters Assistant.

Therefore Scottish Athletics are running a Come & Try Starting at the Age Group championships on the 20th and 21st of August. Interested people can come along between 11:30 & 2:30 and be shown the ropes from a UK Athletics qualified Starter.

Without the expertise of Officials athletics in Scotland would not exist.

Please see this poster for more information.

As with previous years we are asking you to do this online at Entry Central to avoid any admin overhead for our already busy volunteers.

If you joined after 1st October 2015 then your membership is valid for 2016.

If you are a member of the track and field section, please also ensure that your monthly standing order of £5 is setup.

If you have any questions, see our membership page or please speak to Monica or one of the coaches.

MAC Newsletter January 2016

MAC News January 2016

On that special link above you will find the first edition of the new MAC Monthly newsletter.

The plan is to have this distributed to all members through email over time, however I am currently having problems accessing entry central. Please note also that there may still be issues trying to renew membership, but hopefully they will be resolved ASAP. I look forward to your feedback on what I think can be a good communications tool going forward.

Thanks, Mark

Training Over Christmas – William’s and Intermediate Groups

William’s group has now finished training for the festive period and training starts back on Wednesday 6th December at Braidhurst Sports Barn.

For the Intermediate Group (coached by Craig, Jill, Lesley and Steven) training next Wednesday (23rd) is at Wishaw Track – this is of course dependent on the weather so please keep an eye on social media for updates.  There is no training on Monday 28th and Wednesday 30th.  There may be training on Monday 4th January – we will advise nearer the time.

Please see the updated Intermediate Group Training Calendar.

T&F Winter Training Arrangements

Please note that for those who train with William, Jill, Lesley, Craig and Steven on a Wednesday night, training in December and January is at Braidhurst Sports Barn in Motherwell at the usual time of 6-7:45pm.

Athletes should not just be dropped off but taken in to the facility and not left until a member of the coaching team is there.

We will collect £1 from each athlete to help cover the cost of the hire of the hall (this is instead of the £1.80 paid for Wishaw).

With the recent track closures it has come to our attention that we may not have the most up to date contact information – if your details have changed please let a coach know and our records will be updated.

For those who train with Jill, Lesley, Craig and Steven please see the training calendar which lists

  • Training Sessions
  • Open Graded Events we are encouraging the group to enter and
  • Indoor Competitions (the team is selected by the coaches).

If you have any questions, please contact one of the coaches.
